Michelangelo’s Satyr

The Satyr is a classic subject of Greek and Roman mythology, but this golden mask is inspired by the most surely famous representation. It's taken from the face of a satyr that Michelangelo sculpted as a teenager in San Marco Gardens in Florence. Michelangelo reproduced an old man, partly toothless, and kept it all his life as a memory of his youth. His marble sculpture was lost when siezed by the Nazis during the occupation of the city of Florence and it's still remembered today as the symbol of the famous pieces of art lost during the last war.
