This beautiful creation depicts a young Dionysus face, ornamented by leaves and grapes. It is made of Bassano ceramic and coated with a sophisticated combination of golden and silver leaves. The author took inspiration by the French taste of Fontainebleau style, developed in the sixteenth century during the kingdom of Francis the First. In that period, even the every-day use objects were re-designed and finaly decorated. The king's intention was to recreate a rich and refined environment, worthy of the great European Renaissance courts. He hired the greatest artists for the royal palace and created the famous Fontainebleau School. The cult of Dionysus (or Bacchus) is lost in the mists of time and influenced all the populations living along the Mediterranean basin. In Greek mythology he was a deity of good luck and vital force, also related to ecstasy and ritual madness. But mostly he was considered the preserver of grape harvest and wine.
A perfect subject indeed to recall the opulence of Francis the First’s court.
