Shinta shadow puppet with golden body, black face and warm colour tones decoration. Shinta is one of the main characters of the Indian epic “Ramayana”, beloved wife of Rama and daughter of king Janaka. Rama got the chance to marry her in Janakpurdham (current city of Janakpur in Nepal) by lifting a heavy bow in a competition organized by King Janaka. Shinta is the avatar of Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. Shinta is portrayed as the symbol of female purity and virtue. She follows her husband into exile, living in Dandaka Forest for fourteen years. She is imprisoned on the island of Lanka until Rama rescues her by defeating the demon king Ravana. She gives birth to Lava and Kusha, the sons of Rama.
