Batara Bayu

This puppet is antique and was actually used for several years in Javanese Shadow Theatre.

Body Size:  66 cm
Total Size:  96 cm

This gorgeous Batara Bayu is really big and is painted with beautiful colors, from pink to deep purple. It has two sticks of buffalo horn, the central one made of wood, few old restorations on a wrist, the neck and the belly. Small parts of the garment are detached. All those minor damages testify its authenticity as an antique, and tell about its glorious past.

Bayu in the Hindu religion is a main God, the God of Wind. Air (Vayu) or wind (Pavana) is one element in the Panca Maha Bhuta, the five basic elements in the Hindu religion. At the time of Treta Yuga, Batara Bayu became the teacher of ape Hanuman, giving him all the powers that made him a protagonist in Ramayana story. Batara Bayu is the God of wind. Has the Javanese Wayang, or scenic representations, got its name from this personage, as the figures shown on the screen have no reality, but are only shadows, and for that reason compared to the air or the wind?
