This puppet is antique and was actually used for several years in Javanese Shadow Theatre.

Bagong appears in Yogyakarta shadow puppet shows and, strangely, not in Surakarta ones, as one of the sons of Semar, along with Petruk and Gareng. The four characters together forms the group of Punokawan (clowns), cheered by the Indonesian audience as a break in the tension of the story and a moment of relax and laughters.

This highly expressive clown character, all painted in gold, is in very good conditions and presents only minor restorations. The handkerchief he holds in his hand is a real piece of batik tissue and a funny clock is painted as if it was hanging from around his neck.
